The design of the Jacquemus boutique in London started with the idea of pushing the boundaries of working with a single material. Drawing inspiration from the brand’s roots in the south of France, OMA sought to evoke the essence of Jacquemus’ native Provence through the materiality of the spaces. Rather than designing the form and then selecting the materials, the materials were chosen from the outset, guiding the shape of the space throughout the design process.
At Harvey Nichols, the store is covered with our clay-based plaster, Claystone, inspired by traditional materials found in Provençal homes. Made from natural components and applied by hand with a trowel, the material imparts a sense of authenticity and craftsmanship to the design. Much like the ‘sculpted interiors’ of French artist Valentine Schlegel (1925-2021), the architectural elements blend seamlessly with the furniture into a continuous space, making the store more than just a place to shop – a place to feel at home.
Jacquemus and the architects at OMA were so pleased with the Claystone product that they decided to apply the plaster in their boutiques in Copenhagen and Zurich, as well as across 2,500 square meters in their headquarters in Paris.
