FAQ
-
-
- Ease of use and time savings
- Our coatings are designed to be practical and effective on the job site. They can be mixed in larger quantities, offering a longer shelf life in the bucket compared to traditional products, which means the coating can be applied without rushing and without risk of waste. In addition, we supply pigments separately, pre-measured, so that applicators can simply mix them on site and start work immediately.
- VOC-free products for a healthy environment
- All our coatings, including protective varnishes, are formulated without Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). This means that our products do not release harmful substances into the indoor air. Craftsmen can work without a VOC mask and without eye irritation, ensuring optimal comfort during application.
- Comfort and well-being for craftsmen
- We have designed our products to be pleasant to use. Their easy-to-work texture and non-irritating formulation ensure comfortable application while delivering a high-quality finish.
- Warm and pleasant to the touch
- Unlike cement, which has a cold and rigid feel, our coatings offer a warm and soft touch, ideal for decorative interiors. This creates a more welcoming and comfortable atmosphere.
- Flexibility for durable surfaces
- Thanks to their composition, our plasters are flexible and resistant to micro-cracks, making them particularly suitable for decorative interior surfaces. This flexibility ensures increased durability and a long-lasting aesthetic appearance.
Why is cement less recommended for decorative interior surfaces?
Cement is less flexible and more rigid than ClayLime plasters, which increases the risk of cracking over time, especially in indoor environments. In addition, its production is energy-intensive and generates significant CO₂ emissions, making it less environmentally friendly.
-
- Reduced CO₂ emissions Unlike cement, which is very energy-intensive to produce and generates significant CO₂ emissions, our lime- and clay-based coatings are made from natural, environmentally friendly, and non-toxic materials. They therefore contribute to a healthier living environment while minimizing the carbon footprint. What’s more, their durability and resistance to wear and tear guarantee a low environmental impact throughout their entire life cycle.
- Primer Our primer is acrylic-based, VOC-free (Volatile Organic Compounds) and epoxy-free. It is non-toxic, easy to apply and guarantees optimal adhesion for a long-lasting finish.
- No VOCs in any of our products, even varnishesAll our coatings and finishes, including protective varnishes, are formulated without VOCs. This means they do not release harmful substances into the indoor air, providing a healthy and safe environment for occupants.
Q: What types of furniture can be covered with your plaster?
A: Our plasrter can be applied to rigid, fixed furniture such as tables, worktops, and cabinets. Surfaces must be smooth, clean, and free of cracks.
Q: What substrate is recommended?
A: We recommend green MDF—water-resistant.
Q: What preparation is necessary before application?
A:
a. If it is a single green MDF board without joints, you can apply PrimerPro directly to the substrate and then coat the substrate with the coating of your choice. Also apply the appropriate protective measures as indicated in our instructions and on our website.
b. If it is a piece of furniture assembled from several boards:
- Unify the surface with a filler and mesh to prevent cracks.
- If the filler does not even out the absorption rate, apply a blocking primer to prevent ghost joints (PVA).
- Apply our PrimerPro and follow the instructions provided for each product.
The surface must be prepared so that it is ready for painting. It must be smooth. There must be no excess material on the joint strip.

Here are the different steps:
- Green gypsum board
- Self-adhesive Gitex tape
- Filling. No extra thickness is required.
- Gypsum blocker lie PVA. The absorption rate must be the same across the entire surface. Otherwise, it may show through the plaster.
- One coat of our ClayLime ‘PrimerPro’ primer, applied with a foam roller.
- 2 coats of MonoSoft
- 4 coats of varnish: 1 coat of Monoseal with an 8-9 mm microfiber roller + 3 coats of PerfectSeal New with an 8-9 mm microfiber roller.
Q: Can ClayLime coatings be applied directly to existing tiles?
A: No, careful surface preparation is essential to ensure adhesion and prevent cracking or peeling. This includes cleaning, strengthening, leveling, and applying a suitable primer.
Preparation and application steps
Q: What steps are necessary to prepare tiles before applying ClayLime coatings?
1. Cleaning and inspection:
Clean the tiles thoroughly to remove any dust, grease, or residue, and check that each tile is securely fixed. Any tiles that are not properly adhered must be re-glued or removed.
2. Application of reinforcement (Gitex):
Use a reinforcement mesh (such as Gitex by Knauf or Mapei) to prevent cracks due to expansion or shrinkage of the tiles.
3. Leveling:
Apply a thin layer of a leveling compound such as Ardex R4 Ultra Rapid to achieve a smooth, even surface. White flexible tile adhesive is an alternative, but Ardex is recommended for its superior quality.
4. Blocking primer:
Apply a blocking primer (pva) before applying ClayLime coatings to ensure uniform absorption and prevent the appearance of ghost joints.
Next, apply PrimerPro and ClayLime plaster with protection if necessary.

Q: What types of training do you offer?
A: ClayLime offers private training for professionals by appointment only, tailored to your needs.
Q: Is it possible to take a training course as an individual?
A: It is not possible to take a training course as an individual. The training is very quick to familiarize professionals with the use of our coatings and save time on the job site. However, the training does not teach you how to handle a spatula and get the hang of it. That comes with experience. We recommend that you purchase a mini-kit and practice. If you are satisfied with the results, you can start your own projects.
Q: Where do the training courses take place and how long do they last?
A: They take place in our workshop in Schaerbeek, Brussels, on Avenue Monplaisir, next to the train station. They last between two and four hours. Training courses always start at 9:30 a.m.
Q: How do I register for a training course?
A: By sending us an email here.
Q: How much does the training cost?
A: €150 excl. VAT + €100 for each additional person—maximum 2 people at a time.
Applying ClayLime platser may seem simple, but it requires technical skills and specific tools to ensure a high-quality finish. If you are an experienced DIYer, you can do it yourself, provided you follow a detailed guide, use complete kits with the right tools, and prepare the surface properly. For a perfect result, call on the services of a ClayLime applicator. Our experts are familiar with the various application techniques, whether on floors, walls, or other surfaces, and will respect the thickness and finish requirements for each project.
As a private individual, we recommend that you first practice with a mini-kit, which you can purchase from us or from various retailers. See the “About” page on our website.
We also invite you to carefully read the instructions and watch the videos on each page of our coatings page before application.
Q: How do I maintain a surface covered with ClayLime plaster?
A: ClayLime plasters are protected with several layers of high-quality matte or satin varnish.
This coating is maintained in the same way as a natural stone floor.
Use a cleaning product such as black soap, a special floor soap, or a soap made from linseed oil (Carolin). Cleaning products containing alcohol, bleach, or acid, such as Antikal, Cillit Bang, vinegar, or similar products, should not be used. If you do need to use an acidic product near the coating—for example, on your taps or shower glass—we recommend protecting the coating with plastic or a cloth.
Recommendations:
- Vacuum (or sweep) the floor once a week.
- Use a neutral product to clean the floor, such as black soap.
- Put felt pads on the legs of your chairs to prevent scratching.
- Check that the casters on chairs and furniture are in good condition and made of rubber/plastic. Metal or hard plastic casters should not be used.
- Do not leave water on the floor for too long, as this may cause limescale stains.
- Be careful with lemon juice and other acidic fruits, wine, coffee, oil, etc. Clean stains with water and dry the floor thoroughly afterwards.
For a deep clean, spray the surface with diluted black soap and leave for 5 minutes. You can use a brush to remove stubborn dirt if necessary. Then clean with a damp cloth.
Small wet spots may appear despite the layers of varnish as the surface remains breathable. These wet spots will dry without causing any damage.
Furniture: during intensive use of furniture in public places, if abnormal wear of the coating appears, notify your applicator so that touch-ups can be made if necessary. Intensive use involving rubbing could increase wear and require more repair than a simple touch-up.
On shower walls (which can only be coated with MonoSoft or Creatina), limescale in the water gradually builds up on the surfaces, to which various residues (soap, dirt, etc.) will adhere. Regular maintenance with black soap is therefore necessary.
Q: Is it possible to get a custom color for ClayLime coatings?
A: Yes, we offer a custom color creation service. This process involves the exclusive use of natural pigments, which guarantees an authentic and environmentally friendly result.
Q: What do I need to request a custom color?
A: You can provide us with a RAL or NCS (Natural Color System) reference so that we can adjust the shade.
Q: How much does it cost to have a custom color created?
A: The color creation service is billed at $250 excluding VAT. This amount covers the development of the shade in the laboratory and the sample for approval. The shipement is not included.
Q: Why do you use only natural pigments?
A: Natural pigments guarantee excellent UV resistance and an authentic finish, while respecting the principles of sustainability and ecology that are important to us.
